Deuces Wild has the most complex strategy of any standard video poker game. With four wild cards changing every hand's optimal play, the number of possible decisions is significantly higher than in Jacks or Better. Free practice isn't optional for Deuces Wild — it's essential.
Why Deuces Wild Strategy Is Harder
In JoB, there's one strategy table. In Deuces Wild, there are effectively five — one for each number of deuces in your hand (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4). Each table has different priorities:
No deuces (67% of hands): Play conservatively. The minimum pay is Three of a Kind, so low pairs have less value than in JoB.
One deuce (26% of hands): Hold the deuce plus any made hand of Three of a Kind or better. Most other cards are discarded.
Two deuces (5% of hands): Hold both deuces. Only keep additional cards if you already have Four of a Kind or better.
Three or four deuces (2% of hands): Hold all deuces. With three, draw two. With four, hold all five (guaranteed Three of a Kind minimum, but drawing one could improve to Five of a Kind or Wild Royal).
Common Mistakes to Practice Away
The most expensive Deuces Wild errors:
- Holding a kicker with a pair. In JoB, keeping an Ace with a pair of 7s feels natural. In Deuces Wild, the kicker has almost no value — discard it.
- Breaking up a paying hand for a long shot. Don't break a made Three of a Kind to chase a Royal. The Three of a Kind already pays.
- Holding too many cards with one deuce. With one deuce and a pair, hold only the deuce and pair — discard everything else.

The Return Reward
Full-pay Deuces Wild (25-15-9-5-3) returns 100.76% with perfect strategy — one of the few VP games where the player has a mathematical edge. But "perfect strategy" is the key phrase. Strategy errors on Deuces Wild are more costly than on simpler games because the decisions are more counterintuitive.
